Body shape needs to be considered for a proper wheelchair fit just as it is necessary to consider correct waist size for a pair of trousers, or collar size.
People can generally be described as ROUND, MUSCULAR, or FRAGILE

  • (A) Endomorphs have rounded shape
  • (B) Ectomorphs have linear fragile shape
  • (C) Mesomorphs hve muscular shape

Age And Body Shape

Body size and proportions change dramatically from infancy to adulthood. In infants for example the head is 25% of the body size whereas in adult only 12.5%

Gender And Body Shape

In general, compared to men women have the following:-

  • Wider hips
  • Longer trunk length
  • Greater chest depth
  • Shorter upper limbs ( shorter humerus)
  • Higher elbow height
  • Shorter collar bone
  • Narrower shoulder width
  • Shorter thigh ( shorter femur)
  • Deeper and wider pelvis
  • Wider hip position
  • Shorter and narrower foot
  • More fatty tissue
