DIAGNOSIS

Scooter Or Powerchairs

SCOOTERS
A Scooter is often appropriate for Customers who are sufficiently mobile to move around the house ( with or without the aid of sticks) and to walk a number of paces to and from their scooter, including self transfer.


The following guide is intended to indicate where client medical conditions which would require a high degree of training qualification and experience on the part of the assessor and supplying company.


POWERCHAIRS


For ease, the more common conditions you will face are classified as GREEN AMBER and RED.


  • GREEN conditions will normally be met with the recommendation for a scooter or straightforward powerchair.
  • AMBER and RED conditions will generally require a powerchair with the appropriate prescription of base and seating.

As a guiding principal, a key criteria will be the customers ability to transfer to the chair/scooter without assistance. Where transfer is via Hoist, or is dependent upon carers the condition will always be RED.


GREEN conditions
Will include:-


  • Anemia
  • Angina
  • Arteriosclerosis
  • Arthritis ( mainly osteo, )
  • Asthma
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • CVE (Cardio vascular event - "stroke") where both sides remains useable (albeit weak), and eyesight unimpaired
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Mild Parkinsons disease
  • Osteoporosis
  • Pulmonary disease
  • Spondylitis (n.b NOT spondylosis)

AMBER conditions
Will include:-


  • Cerebral Palsy
  • CVE (Cardio vascular event - "stroke") where one side remains useable
  • Diabetes - currently moderate or with poor prognosis
  • Emphysema
  • Epilepsy
  • incontinence
  • Lymphoma
  • Lympoedema
  • Moderate Parkinsons disease
  • Multiple sclerosis ( Mild, and in remission)
  • obesity
  • Pneumonacoiosis/asbestosis/mesothelioma
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Single amputees (other than as result of Diabetes, where 2nd amputation is likely)
  • Spondylosis

RED conditions
Will include:-


  • Assessments carried out with OT / RE
  • Asymetric /Symetric Tonic neck reflex
  • Diabetes - currently severe or with poor prognosis
  • Foot limitations
    • Plantarflexion
    • Dorsiflexion
  • Geriatric
  • Hematologic disorders (bleeding disorders incl.Hemophilia)
  • Hip limitations
    • Abduction
    • Adduction
    • Rotation
  • Windblown
  • History or prognosis of "wounds",Pressure sores
  • Inability to keep trunk upright
  • Inability to support own head
  • Knee limitations
    • Extension or contracture outside the 70 - 80 degree range
  • Morbid obesity ( requiring seat greater than 18" wide)
  • Motor Neurone disease
  • Movement disorder
    • Athetosis
    • Ataxia
    • Primative postural reflexes
      • Asymetric /Symetric Tonic neck reflex
      • Tonic Labyrinth
  • Multiple sclerosis - moderate to severe or active
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • Neurological disorder
  • Orthostatic hypertension
  • Orthotics (particularly body jackets)
  • Paraplegia
  • Pediatric
  • Poor Tone
    • Hypertonic
    • Hypotonic
  • Quadraplegia
  • Seizure disorder
  • Severe head injury
  • Severe eyesight deficiency
  • Severe Parkinsons disease
  • Severe spinal deformity/disorders including:-
    • Kyphosis
    • Lordosis
    • Scoliosis
    • Pelvic obliquity
    • Spina Biffida
    • Severe osteoporosis
    • Exostosis
    • Herniated discs
    • SCC ( Spinal cord compression)
    • myelomeningocele
  • Terminally ill patients
  • Tetraplegia
  • Very tall/ long femur ( requiring seat more than 18" deep)
